Landon Fleischman, a.k.a. Boy Williams, has so far encapsulated the process of bridging two worlds. This was true when Maryland’s own brought along his woodsy childhood to LA’s concrete jungles. It also appears prominently in his work, which combines solid folk songwriting with a pastiche of contemporary hip-hop and electronic aesthetics.

With such a distinct identity early in his career, it’s a pleasant surprise to see Fleischman peel off his instrumental layers in his latest release. With nowhere to hide on “Crool,” Fleischman delivers a tender performance that explores another dichotomy—the polarization of his emotions. Clocking at just over two minutes, “Crool” is as bittersweet as it is exceptional.
